The Congress of Scientific Initiation in Architecture and Urbanism (CICAU) is designed as a space for reflection and exchange for students, faculty, and graduates of architecture and related fields. It seeks to focus on, interpret, analyze, and debate the challenges facing contemporary cities through the framework of scientific research—a practice we find lacking in higher education and one we believe must be reinforced to improve the training of future architects.

CICAU emerged from the well-established regional and national meetings of the Brazilian FeNEA (Federação Nacional de Estudantes de Arquitetura). The goal is to foster an exchange of information among students, providing insight into scientific production in each country, as well as their respective particularities, lifestyles, and approaches to architectural and urban challenges.

Arquitectura y ciudad moderna en el sur de Chile. Memoria, territorio y proyecto is a book that originated from the "Surmoderno" seminar, "Valoración del Patrimonio Moderno en el Sur de Chile," held in Concepción in 2015. Two years later, following extensive editorial work, this volume was published to share and disseminate knowledge and reflections on the modern architecture developed in cities such as Chillán, Concepción, Talcahuano, Lota, Nacimiento, Osorno, and Punta Arenas—all of which exemplify the widespread development of this architectural style in the country.

The exhibition "Public School Architecture in São Paulo 1890–2017" celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Foundation for Educational Development (FDE).

The architect and urban planner, a professor at FAUUSP, will attend the opening of the Academic Week of Architecture and Urbanism at the Instituto de Educação Superior da Paraíba (IESP), taking place on April 23.

Titled 'Work' and held as part of the Architectural Culture Lecture Series [CCCA] at the EA USS, architects Loreto Lyon [Beals Lyon Arquitectos] and Tomás Villalón [Tomás Villalón Arquitecto] will discuss workspaces, their architecture, and their relationship with the city. On this occasion, the architects will present the Metro Plaza de Armas building and the Providencia Municipal Building, respectively. The panel will be moderated by USS academic Paula Orta.

From April 23 to 27, 2018, the Minas Gerais-based collective Micrópolis will host the Urban Interventions Workshop for the Pós DAEE program. This activity is organized by the Graduate Program in Design and Architecture of Ephemeral Spaces and will be part of the program for the IESP Academic Week of Architecture and Urbanism.

Reinier de Graaf joined OMA in 1996. He is responsible for construction and masterplanning projects in Europe, Russia, and the Middle East, including Holland Green in London (completed in 2016), the new Timmerhuis in Rotterdam (completed in 2015), the G-Star Headquarters in Amsterdam (completed in 2014), De Rotterdam (completed in 2013), and the Norra Tornen residential towers in Stockholm.

Nivaldo Andrade, national president of the Institute of Architects of Brazil (IAB), will participate in a roundtable discussion as part of the Academic Week of Architecture and Urbanism (SAAU’18), taking place from April 23 to 27 in João Pessoa, Paraíba. The event is organized by the Higher Education Institute of Paraíba (IESP). It seeks to focus on, interpret, analyze, and debate current issues in our cities through scientific initiation and academic research—a practice often overlooked in architecture and urbanism education. Consequently, we believe it is essential to reinforce the importance of research and the role of the student as a protagonist in their professional development.

On Sunday, May 6, La Red TV will premiere “Chiloé,” a documentary series that explores how architecture connects with a unique way of viewing the world. The five half-hour episodes will feature documentary segments starring architects, carpenters, artisans, and residents, showcasing the diverse realities established there.

The headquarters building of the Armando Alvares Penteado Foundation (FAAP) is the subject of the latest exhibition at MAB-FAAP. The show highlights the work of the French architect Auguste Perret, one of the most significant figures in architecture during the first half of the 20th century.

The construction industry is one of the largest sectors in Brazil, with high rates of non-professional labor covering a large percentage of urban construction, conceived without the supervision of a technical professional, such as an architect or engineer. The high costs associated with construction lead a large segment of society to seek alternatives for building their homes. Throughout this process, these individuals acquire informal technical knowledge in the construction field; however, the lack of specific design and planning leads to problems such as poorly utilized, dimly lit, and poorly ventilated spaces, a lack of alternatives for material use, unnecessary demolitions, and extended construction timelines that generate expenses and unforeseen issues.

The team at Hamaca Arquitectura invites architecture students to the second season of their studio mentorship sessions. To participate, students must register for this initiative, which aims to improve undergraduate studio projects.
