Romullo Baratto is an architect with a PhD from FAUUSP and Managing Editor of ArchDaily. He previously coordinated the editorial team of the 11th São Paulo Architecture Biennial and served as Managing Editor of ArchDaily Brasil, where he led the platform to win the FNA Award—the first time the honor was granted to a media outlet. He collaborated on the editing of the book "Concrete Jungle", published by gestalten, and has curated architecture exhibitions in Brazil, Chile, Denmark, and Italy, as well as delivered lectures and moderated debates in Spain, the United States, and Portugal. His doctoral thesis investigates the urban landscapes of São Paulo through cinema. Federal District's Proposal to Reconstruct Eixão Sul Blocked by Iphan for Violating Brasília's Heritage Designation

The Federal District office of Iphan did not approve the project submitted by the Federal District Department of Roads (DER-DF) for the reconstruction of the section of the Eixão Sul that collapsed in February of this year, burying two cars and the tables of a restaurant.

The agency responsible for Brazil's artistic and cultural heritage blocked the proposal, claiming that the DER-DF/Novacap project "significantly alters the original architecture and compromises the architectural and urban integrity and, by extension, that of the Plataforma Rodoviária complex and complementary road system."

São Bernardo do Campo City Hall opens public competition for architects

The Municipal Government of São Bernardo do Campo has opened applications for a public selection process with ten vacancies for architects and urban planners. Organized by the Fundação VUNESP, the exam requires candidates to hold a degree in architecture and urban planning and an active professional registration with CAU/SP.

Paulo Mendes da Rocha's project for Ibirapuera Park is canceled by the City of São Paulo

Paulo Mendes da Rocha is currently the most admired and respected figure in Brazilian architecture. However, his extensive list of works narrowly missed including an intervention project for the work of another master, Oscar Niemeyer. Commissioned in 2015 by São Paulo's previous municipal administration to develop a redesign project for Ibirapuera Park, the proposal by the 2006 Pritzker Prize laureate was shelved in December of last year.

The life and work of Athos Bulcão become the subject of a children's book

An inseparable figure from Brasília, Athos Bulcão is responsible for works that bring color and geometric patterns to the purity of the federal capital's architecture. To promote the artist's work, the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage (Iphan) launched the book Athos, Colorindo Brasília, the first volume of the Patrimônio para Jovens collection, an initiative by Iphan's Federal District office and the Federal District Department of Education (SEDF).

Historic heritage is the theme of the 1st CAU/GO Photography Contest

Ten advanced modeling tutorials in SketchUp

SketchUp is one of the most widely used digital modeling software programs in both professional practice and academia—and undoubtedly the most intuitive. However, the ease of creating orthogonal geometries can quickly turn into a nightmare when the goal is to design curved and organic shapes and objects.

With this in mind, Gabriel Chahoud of Chahoud Cursos released 30 video tutorials for what he called "SketchUp Month," sharing tips on how to model objects that, at first glance, seem complex to create in this software.

Drawing and expressionism at the Bauhaus

The Architecture, Education, and Society graduate program at Escola da Cidade invited Rodrigo Mendes de Souza to present research on the pedagogical program of the Bauhaus Vorkurs during the directorship of Walter Gropius.

Through the theories of Pure Visibility (Sichtbarkeit) and Objectivity (Sachlichkeit), Rodrigo Mendes de Souza addressed Walter Gropius's pedagogical program for the Bauhaus, drawing on various authors—such as K. Fiedler, A. Riegl, H. Wölfflin, and G. Semper—to better understand the school's pedagogical theory and practice.

"Situating Jane Jacobs": A debate on one of the 20th century's greatest urbanists

Esquina, a platform dedicated to cities, is hosting the launch of the book Situating Jane Jacobs on August 7. The book is a collection of essays by various authors, edited by Renato Cymbalista—an architect, urbanist, and professor at FAU-USP—and published by Anna Blume.

The event will also feature a discussion on the significance of Jacobs beyond her seminal 1961 book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, which remains one of the most important essays ever written on urban life.

Arquite-Tô: Sesc SP presents a series of events and activities related to architecture and the city

Starting today, Sesc São Paulo is hosting the Arquite-Tô project, which invites the public to imagine how the arts and architecture can articulate knowledge and more democratic ways of building, inhabiting, and enjoying space.

CAU/RJ celebrates Architect and Urban Planner Day with the presentation of the Grandjean de Montigny award

This year’s Architect and Urban Planner Day will be a time for celebration and recognition. Docomomo São Paulo Chapter hosts the "2018 Wilton Paes de Almeida Meeting"

The Wilton Paes de Almeida building, a landmark of modern architecture in São Paulo and recognized as a municipal cultural heritage site in 1992, collapsed following a massive fire on May 1st of this year. Launch of the book "Lina Bo Bardi", edited by Marcelo Ferraz

The Instituto Bardi / Casa de Vidro, in partnership with Romano Guerra Editora, will launch the 4th edition of the book Lina Bo Bardi—out of print since 2010—on May 26th at 11:00 AM at the Casa de Vidro. Edited by Marcelo Ferraz, the first edition was published in 1993, one year after the architect's passing.

The book provides an overview of Lina's work and thought through texts, drawings, and photographs. “Lina's work is essential reading for those who see architecture as a means to strive for a more just and comfortable world,” says Marcelo Ferraz, who worked with the architect for 15 years, sharing ideas and challenges.
