Although computational design as a technique applied in the architectural field has been around for two decades, the infinite possibilities it presents are only just being discovered. The horizons of designing using programming software are expanding alongside the growing popularity of tools like Rhino 3D and Revit. What aspiring architects will hereon have to be mindful of as they train themselves for the industry is that computational design software is not to be treated as a ‘to-do item’ to be ticked off for only adding to one’s résumé. Rather, it’s an opportunity to delve deeper into one’s creative instincts.

In keeping with a tradition dating back to 1969, the Colegio de Arquitectos de Chile (Association of Architects of Chile) is calling for nominations for the 2022 National Architecture Award. This is the highest honor an architect or architectural team can receive in the country. According to the Regulations for Awards and Distinctions, the prize recognizes individuals "whose career and ethical and professional performance have set an example for all architects, in any manifestation of professional practice, whether in the field of architectural execution, academic work, professional association involvement, public service, or public management."

The exhibition "Pidgeon Audio Visual: Architects Speak for Themselves" examines the Pidgeon Audio Visual series, a collection of architectural talks on cassette and slide created by Monica Pidgeon, focusing on its interface and its connection to education and the publishing industry. The exhibition presents a selection of the more than 200 slide and cassette presentations from the 1980s and 1990s, alongside a selection of document reproductions from the Monica Pidgeon archive housed at the Royal Institute of British Architects, which detail the production, editing, and distribution process of the talks.

The registration for the international ICONIC AWARDS 2022: Innovative Architecture is on. The awards of the German Design Council honour the best achievements in architecture, pioneering interior and product design, outstanding communication concepts and particularly innovative materials. The winners will be honoured at a festive awards ceremony on 4 October 2022 at the Pinakothek der Moderne and will have the opportunity to network internationally.

When it comes to the shaping of public spaces, an airport lounge provides glorious scope for the flexing of design muscles. When a space serves a broad spectrum of tastes and types, what guides the aesthetic? When hundreds of people tread its floors daily, what materials will withstand the wear and tear? And what furnishing and effects does the space require in the first place? Are people using it to fuel up on food before a flight, or as a temporary office? As part of a major initiative to modernise schools and educational facilities in the city of Düsseldorf, the Friedrich-Rückert grammar school renovation represents a first step towards the future. In addition to renovating the interior of the school, much work was done to make the exterior of the aging building look more modern, inspiring and inviting. The new 3,000 m2 facade made of glassfibre reinforced concrete panels from Rieder bridges the architectural gap to the here and now. The innovative concrete is a symbolic step towards sustainability, fit for a modern school building. The new texture twine was also used for the first time in this project for the colour-matched formed parts, skilfully highlighting the building envelope.

The NYCxDESIGN Festival returns this May 10-20, 2022 for its tenth anniversary edition. As the city’s official celebration of design, the Festival has attracted thousands of visitors to New York City each year to celebrate global creative accomplishments, share new ideas, and inspire through design. Following the success of last year’s competition, the London Festival of Architecture (LFA) is delighted to launch the second edition of Showroom Showcase competition, which will see a series of innovative paper installations by emerging architects and designers displayed in some of London’s leading design showrooms. Fricciones, an international meeting for learning exchanges, will serve as a forum to share unexpected situations that allow us to rethink how we want to learn. The event seeks to create spaces where new forms and experiences of learning can emerge. In this edition, we aim to focus on the frictions that occur in learning between, for example, teaching methods, spaces and architectures, bodies, or policies.

Extended reality needs to become more than nice renderings and simple copy of reality in virtuality. What is the sense of architecture in virtual worlds and what can architects produce and implement that goes beyond game design? I am sure we will get super interesting ideas from our students and that architecture and it's meaning and power goes far beyond what we see with classical architects going viral. Virtual reality is not a marketing hub. And architects therefor should not abuse it as such but implement basic ideas of architecture adapted to the gained freedom of not being bound to real life. Shelter, expression of ideas, form defined by use, all these criteria still exist and these are the challenges in any world.
