Solar Cladding in SunRise Residential Retrofit | Mitrex

Mitrex is a specialist in high-performance building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems that combine solar generation and façade aesthetics.

For the SunRise Residential Retrofit in Edmonton, Alberta, Mitrex eFacade PRO and PRO+ panels were used to transform a 12-storey high-rise into a sustainable, energy-generating building. This deep retrofit project demonstrates how building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) can enhance both the performance and cultural value of residential architecture.

The SunRise building, a Guinness World Record-setting high-rise, underwent a comprehensive retrofit led by Avenue Living Asset Management, MBC Group, and Chandos Development. Covering approximately 30,564 ft², the project replaced aging cladding with a hybrid BIPV façade system, achieving a 54% reduction in carbon emissions. The PRO panels clad most of the tower in neutral granite tones with colored accents, while the PRO+ system created a 26-metre solar mural on the north façade. Designed by Cree artist Lance Cardinal, the mural integrates complex graphics and color gradients directly on the solar glass, combining cultural storytelling with energy production.

Mitrex eFacade PRO and PRO+ panels work together to create a visually striking, maintenance-free, and energy-active envelope. The system delivers 267 kW, producing roughly 180,000 kWh annually—enough to power 23 homes. The custom mural and complementary façade modules demonstrate the versatility of Mitrex technology, integrating performance, aesthetics, and social value into one cohesive solution. Backed by a lifetime envelope warranty guaranteeing a minimum of 80% energy output after 25 years, the façade ensures long-term durability while supporting deep retrofit sustainability targets.
