Characteristics
Lightweight aluminum foam panels with a porous metallic surface, acoustic absorption, visual texture, modern industrial aesthetic
Cymat Technologies Ltd. is a Toronto-based materials technology company with exclusive global rights to produce Alusion™ Stabilized Aluminum Foam, a lightweight and visually distinctive material used in architectural and interior design projects worldwide.
Alusion™ Stabilized Aluminum Foam panels were selected for ceiling applications in key areas of the Musinsa Campus N1, located in Seongsu-dong, Seoul. This is the first consolidated headquarters for Musinsa, a fashion commerce platform experiencing rapid and multidimensional growth. The project by STUDIO INTUNE was conceived as a space to unify the company’s previously dispersed offices and to support evolving organizational needs, fluid team structures, and a contemporary work culture. Reflecting the brand’s minimalist and neutral identity, the architectural language is calm and restrained, yet spatially dynamic.
The project is housed within a square-plan building characterized by ambiguous boundaries between its inner and outer zones. The design strategy responds to this with a spatial choreography based on centrifugal and centripetal dynamics. While naturally lit spaces along the perimeter accommodate focused individual work, the central zone, strategically located at an equidistant point from all edges, was designed to generate integration and shared use. Here, the architects positioned meeting rooms and a canteen, linking them directly to elevators and restrooms, creating a cohesive communal core that serves all users equally.
This spatial duality is further emphasized by the use of alley-like corridors that carve out circulation paths between enclosed volumes. These narrow passages encourage intuitive navigation and offer users multiple routes based on preference and need. The spatial sequencing allows for rapid psychological transitions between solitude and collaboration, a feature that aligns with the flexible nature of modern work environments.
As part of this environment, Alusion™ Stabilized Aluminum Foam panels were applied. Their subtle, metallic texture and lightweight structure contribute both acoustically and aesthetically to the atmosphere of the central zone. The panels add a quiet material richness without disrupting the project’s overall sense of visual restraint. Their porous, sponge-like appearance resonates with the layered spatiality of the design, offering an overhead rhythm that complements the balance between structure and openness.
The material choice reinforces the project’s sensitivity to both performance and atmosphere, absorbing ambient sound in active zones while introducing a contemporary, industrial elegance that aligns with Musinsa’s brand and the creative energy of Seongsu-dong. While the Alusion™ panels are not present in all areas, their application in ceilings plays a key role in reinforcing the acoustic and visual continuity of the central shared spaces.
