More about this product

LONGOTON® tiles are a type of rear-ventilated brick developed by German manufacturer MOEDING, which distinguishes itself by the lengths and shapes that each piece can achieve, of up to 3,000 mm, on facades with irregular, flat, or even curved surfaces.

Facade of the Kuggen with ALPHATON tiles

These tiles were used on the facade of the new Kuggen office building on the campus of the Chalmers University of Technology in Götenborg. The tiles are customized in triangular glazed ceramic tiles in five different shades of red, two variants of green, and one black shade, specified by the firm Wingårdh. The black shades alternate with the glazed surfaces, which present a shingled facade with rainscreen cladding in varying shapes.

Close-Up to the ALPHATON tiles of the facade

The cone-shaped building is located in the middle of the town’s square, with an increasingly larger floor surface as the building goes up. This dynamic, as well as the tilting of the triangular tiles, helps shade the building by itself. The top floors are shaded by a mobile screen that follows the sun’s path. The building’s program is divided between social areas on the lower floors and office space on the upper levels.

Close-Up to the ALPHATON tiles of the facade

The glazing on the pieces of the ceramic facade and their shifting position give the surface a distinct look at every angle and hour of the day. The windows of the facade follow the style of the tiles and are also triangular.

The red colors were chosen to represent the industrial paint associated with the harbor, contrasting with the accents of the green tiles that fit randomly on the screen.

The LONGOTON® brick tile is characterized by its flexibility in shape and length, which can reach up to 3,000 mm. This brick tile was introduced into the market in 2001, as a response to the demand for long-format ceramic tiles.

The facade system offers:

  • long-lasting materials
  • natural resources
  • efficient production
  • economical development through fast and efficient installation
  • high individuality due to large design option potential
  • energy efficient
  • low maintenance
