Hong Kong’s West Kowloon Cultural District is an area dedicated to cultural initiatives, where M+, Asia's largest contemporary art museum, opened in November 2021. The latest addition to the district is the Hong Kong Palace Museum, a permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of Chinese arts and culture.
Inside, the Museum’s exhibits are arranged across nine galleries, where visitors can admire displays of paintings, calligraphy, rare books, ceramics, jewelry, and textiles, among others. Goppion created 260 showcases for each particular exhibit: 206 are vertical freestanding cases, 51 are horizontal freestanding or modular tabletop designs, and three additional vertical wall-mounted examples.
Exhibition Design
The project brief required all showcases to be of a neutral design, allowing seamless incorporation into different display structures throughout the galleries. Goppion ensured that fundamental design elements met the performance criteria expected for security, with locks for technical compartments and exhibition space.
The use of special high-performance glass provides both high transparency and low reflection. Combined, these qualities delivered a suite of showcases that protect and conserve some of China’s most treasured artworks.
