Over ten years in the making, this terminal’s Grand Hall features an exceptionally intricate public art installation in terrazzo. Sixteen colors and 375 waterjet-cut elements of brass and zinc form the design dubbed “Secret Garden” with its collection of hummingbirds, poppies, brass insects, and abstract shapes.
The terrazzo flooring works perfectly with the scale and architectural elements in the space, resin and aggregates were supplied by Terrazzo & Marble-Supply Companies. Besides the Grand Hall installation, another 6,000 square-feet of single-color epoxy terrazzo flooring was installed in five different areas of the building at the same time, including five staircases of precast terrazzo and 11 elevator cab floors.
Installation
The design and installation of the floor were especially delicate since it needed to take into account the second construction phase, during which, large structural slabs will be removed so that escalators can be introduced to provide access to projected commuter and high-speed rail.
The terrazzo was installed on a concrete topping slab containing a radiant flooring system over several inches of rigid foam insulation. When installers were asked to expedite the six-month installation schedule, they trimmed a month off and increased the quality of the bent divider strip patterns by pre-fabricating the divider strips on panels, many as large as 11x17 feet, aligned on the construction site.
