Abstract:
Kasvu is the 2024–2025 full-scale building project of Aalto University’s Wood Program: a 9.4 m² minimalist wooden living unit that explores wood architecture through care, adaptability, and responsible resource use. Conceived as both technical research and an academic statement, Kasvu rethinks minimal living as a collective ethic rather than an individual constraint.
Organized around a central Heart Space, the unit is structured by four cross-shaped timber columns that support cantilevered extensions: the Future Dreams module for rest, the KJ module for cooking, and the H2O module for hygiene. This clear spatial structure emphasizes the essential functions of dwelling while maintaining openness and comfort within a compact footprint.
Kasvu promotes inclusive and sustainable ways of living by minimizing environmental impact and maximizing adaptability. Its lightweight point foundations demonstrate a respectful relationship with the ground. Prefabricated, flat-packable, and crane-free, the system enables accessible construction and potential replication in diverse contexts. Structural and non-structural layers are separated to allow maintenance, reuse, and long-term transformation. Built from sawn timber, plywood, and renewable insulation, the system can adapt to locally available materials.
By proposing a flexible, low-impact dwelling prototype, Kasvu expands the idea of care to include future users, local ecosystems, and careful use of resources.
