Abstract:

Architecture of Release re-frames the LaSalle Metro Station in Buffalo as a transit-oriented development that relieves rather than reinforces urban pressure. The station currently suffers from a lack of connectivity with the green spaces, neighborhoods, and Main Street. Additionally, it faces long-term affordability issues for its demographic. The design process begins with the following question: Can a transit hub relieve pressure rather than create it?

LaSalle Station is a significant transit hub within the urban sprawl of Buffalo. However, it currently works against the potential for a more inclusive and active urban environment by creating pressure rather than relieving it. Therefore, the design introduces access punctures that cut through parking lots and rail barriers, reconnecting the neighborhoods, departmental store, Shoshone Park, and Rail-to-Trail Park via new pedestrian and cycling infrastructure aligned with universal design.

Greenhouse punctures for the residential areas allow the inhabitants to grow food, create products, share skills, and sell them through a community marketplace within the station, helping to address the affordability issue.

At the micro level, corridor puncture pockets create social and economic spaces ensuring accessibility and inclusivity.

Prefabricated balconies serve as personal punctures on the facade, offering affordable space for customization .overall the station becomes a space of community agency.
