Zanine Caldas – Creating Worlds

Zanine Caldas – Criação de mundos will be on view until November 7, 2026, at the Casa-ateliê Tomie Ohtake, the artist's former residence in Campo Belo, São Paulo. Curated by Sabrina Fontenele with assistance from Lahayda Mamani Poma, the exhibition brings together furniture, models, drawings, architectural projects, photographs, films, and documents from various stages of José Zanine Caldas’s (1919–2001) career.
Organized into four sections, the exhibition explores his work as a model maker, designer, self-taught architect, and educator. It presents everything from his research with plywood that led to the creation of Móveis Artísticos Z to his "protest furniture," crafted from logs discarded by the timber industry. Models and records of his houses demonstrate how Zanine designed based on the site, available materials, and the craftsmanship of artisans and carpenters. At the Casa-ateliê, the exhibition draws parallels between his career and that of Tomie Ohtake, highlighting their shared focus on experimentation and the act of making.

What Wood Should I Use on the Coast?

 | Sponsored Content
Audio available

Wood and coastal architecture have always gone together. It's one of the defining materials of coastal structures. But creating that aesthetic in an environment where weather is a constant part of life demands more from the wood you choose.

Rain isn't unique to coastal areas. What makes the coast different is the combination and frequency of exposure. Humidity, ocean winds, salt-laden air, direct sun, and frequent storms repeatedly take wood from wet to dry and back again. In many coastal regions, these aren't occasional weather events. They are simply part of the climate. That makes two characteristics especially important when selecting wood for coastal construction: durability and dimensional stability.

Form Follows Fiction: Six Inquiries

Form Follows Fiction: Six Inquiries brings together six architectural projects that challenge one of architecture's most enduring assumptions: that form follows function. Examining work by six international architects, the exhibition — part of the main program of the 20th Buenos Aires Architecture Biennial — reveals how architecture can emerge from diverse, and often contradictory, narratives and ideas: pragmatic and artistic, collective and individual, pure and complex, restrained and expressive, structured and intuitive, logical and arbitrary. Together, these positions resist any single ideology or consensus.
