Competition Visual for Shift Architecture Competition
Throughout history, humans have created landmarks—from pyramids to cathedrals to skyscrapers—to unite communities, showcase progress, and spark inspiration. Now, Shift, a new social venture founded by Dutch entrepreneur Don Ritzen, aims to construct a landmark specifically designed to inspire climate action and which looks to attract over one million annual visitors. To turn this ambitious vision into reality, Shift is launching an international architecture competition on January 15, 2025, with a total prize pool of 250,000 EUR.
The city of Kharkiv has faced significant challenges due to its proximity to the Russian border. Amidst these circumstances, Kharkiv's Mayor, Ihor Terekhov, underscored the need for a new landmark during the United Nations' Second Forum of Mayors—a project that could embody renewal, resilience, and hope. The Freedom Square International Competition was launched as part of this vision, inviting local and international experts to propose innovative designs for Freedom Square and the Kharkiv Regional State Administration Building.
This competition is part of the broader Kharkiv Masterplan Concept, an initiative led by the Kharkiv City Council in collaboration with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the Norman Foster Foundation, Arup, and local architects and experts. The Masterplan Concept seeks to guide Kharkiv's regeneration by fostering a vibrant, inclusive, and forward-looking urban environment while honoring the city's historical identity.

In the world of design, most of our attention is given to the objects and spaces we create. But behind every great space, there is a team of people who have been working for months, if not years, to make it possible. How these teams work together, and under what conditions work is getting done, has been an area of increased focus over the past years. Particularly in the field of architecture—where many of the common pitfalls of creative disciplines also intersect with regulatory requirements and exceptions to Ontario’s Employment Standards Act—there is an understanding that we must do better.

Through intergenerational storytelling with more than 200 community members, we invite you to explore how shared memory, imagination, and co-design can build community power. "Cold" memories anchor Chinatown in its legacy of anti-displacement organizing and mutual aid traditions. "Hot" memories celebrate Chinatown as an everyday, dynamic, and active space. Together, these memories honour Chinatown's past while reminding us that Chinatown's story is still being written every day.
