Downtown Los Angeles is on the verge of a breakthrough moment. It is becoming more livable, walkable and enjoyable as we speak. But what's missing? A multidisciplinary panel at the A+D Museum examines the promise of DTLA almost a decade after the museum's show Enlightened Development asked the question: How do we foster a "sustainable downtown revitalization"? What can we learn from other cities where a similar downtown renaissance has taken place?
This credit-bearing HKU course was established in 2010 to focus on urgent architectural and urban issues confronting Asian cities today. It is an immersive course designed to expose students to daily learning activities including lectures, seminars, studio crits, field work, firm visits, and design reviews.
Born from an idea of Publicomm, ARCHMARATHON is the first international architectural event that brings together 42 Architecture Design Studios from different countries of the world. The first Edition was held in Milano in 2014 and hosted more than 1800 architects for the 3 day event. The 2015 Edition was done in Beirut, focusing on Arab and Mediterranean Countries, and hosted more than 8,000 architects and students in the 3 day event. Archmarathon in 2016 will take place in Milan on 13-15 May.
AAgora is a debate platform based at the Architectural Association, London, which aims to shed light on relevant architectural topics. These debates take the form of an open-table discussion which encourages the audience to participate at any time. AAgora's third debate will be "Pret A Habiter" - or, Ready to Inhabit - Towards Nomadic Homogeneity, in the city through the sharing economy and Airbnb.
Chicago Sukkah Expo ’16 is a national design competition that challenges entrants to re-imagine the sukkah. The sukkah, a temporary structure that is built during the Jewish festival of Sukkot, commemorates the 40 years that Jews spent wandering the desert (Leviticus 23:42-43). The impermanence of the sukkah reminds us that many community members do not have adequate shelter and are threatened by the dangers of homelessness. We must devote attention and support those without a permanent home.
This is a call for works of art or design that (i) might fairly be called ‘objects’ by the nascent philosophies of Speculative Realism and Object Oriented Ontology, and that (ii) will throw light on architecture as a peculiar set of objects, phenomena, ideas, relations, connections, skills, materials, obligations, and operations. A selection of twenty of these Objects—all physical and all, whether singular or configurations of smaller objects, falling within the four Parameters set out below—will be exhibited for two weeks around a three-day symposium to be staged by the Center for American Architecture and Design (CAAD) at The University of Texas at Austin in October 2016 called “The Secret Life of Buildings."

Architecture as Catalyst is an annual week-long event, bringing new ideas, conversations, and expertise to the school by inviting guests from around the world to run experimental workshops with graduate students and give public lectures on their work. Each year, the week before spring break, first and second year graduate architecture students engage with the guests and host faculty in intensive five-day workshops, each focused around a unique set of ideas and techniques.
The act of creating new objects from scratch is often no longer possible for the professional architect given the social and economic contexts of our contemporary world. In some societies, building booms during periods of high economic growth have resulted in a collection of contemporary ruins that are now neglected due to a lack of resources or lack of need for their use. In other contexts, architecture emerges as a result of decision-making processes that allocate minimal resources to the basic human need of habitation. A contradiction thus exists between the architecture commonly presented by the media as finished forms frozen in time, and architecture that has the capacity to evolve, adapt, and transform.

Het Nieuwe Instituut, the Dutch institute for architecture, design, and digital culture in Rotterdam, have announced an open call for three research fellows to work in residence between June and December 2016. Alongside the institute’s exhibitions, lectures, publications, and archives, the Fellowship program will explore and challenge how research is conducted within an institutional context, pursuing alternatives to the expectation of predetermined outcomes, the use of official jargon, and the inertia power of the curriculum vitae. In the long term, the program is also intended to complement, reflect on, interact with, and critique the ongoing activities of the institute.

A new exhibition is coming out of the Le Corbusier portfolio of architectural photographer Cemal Emden who has been working on the master architect’s oeuvre for the last five years. The exhibition, organized by Istanbul Association of Architects in Private Practice (IstanbulSMD) will be inaugurated in Isik Art Gallery (Istanbul) on 9th of March 2016 and it will put in display a number of the major works of Le Corbusier, spanning over a period of half a century. Apart from Emden’s photographs, texts by Turkish and international scholars who studied Le Corbusier’s work will also be featured in the exhibition.

City Debates 2016 stems from a relational and multi-scalar understanding of urban policy as an assemblage of ideas and tools that circulate and transform. We seek to examine how international aid promotes the mobility of urban policy ideas, and mobilizes a range of stakeholders, and technologies in the process. We explore these questions by investigating two sets of urban policies: regional planning, and refugee policies.
