The lecture is part of the 4th Global Alumni Meeting, which will take place on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th of April 2023 in Barcelona.
Marziah Zad is continuously cultivating an architectural design approach that is positioned at the intersection of investigative, computational design and a celebration of existing narratives related to place and identity.
Marziah developed professional experience in Lebanon, Spain, Iran, and West Coast USA before cofounding Ashrafi & Zad Design in 2019. Working from the intimate scale to the territorial, the practice has been awarded multiple distinctions for designed and completed projects.
Marziah is part of the design faculty at the University of Oregon’s School of Architecture and Environments in Oregon, and San Jose State University’s College of Design in California, USA.
Transformative Spaces
There is a global shift towards designing spaces which are sensitive to the environments they exist in, and the people who experience them daily. As such, architecture can reveal itself as a space of stories, through which we begin to imagine the experiences that buildings create, and how they change our communities and our cities.
Combining structural inquiry with optimized design solutions, Ashrafi & Zad Design strives to explore the limits of engineering and design towards inspiring and meaningful architectural applications. The approach is geared towards high performance systems and the application of innovative structural morphologies. Through defining geometry as a language of expression that communicates with identity, the practice takes advantage of digital tools to examine how design technologies can benefit communities.
Marziah Zad will introduce projects which grew from explorative engineering and a celebration of place and identity, as case studies for the challenges and rewards of this design methodology.
