Despite turbulent times, this year's largest film festival about architecture and city offers a more diverse program than ever. The twelfth edition of the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam will take place from 7 to 11 October 2020 in LantarenVenster as usual. But also at new locations, such as in the studio of Conny Janssen Danst in Fenixloods I and in a Drive In cinema on the parking lot of RDM campus.
Taking Guilty Architecture as its theme, AFFR goes in search of the moral dilemmas of our time with a critical selection of films and documentaries about the city and architecture. The Covid-19 pandemic has dramatically exposed the vulnerability of life on earth, challenging architecture, urban design and our relationship with nature. The devastating ecological consequences of global urbanization call on the moral understanding of developers and architects. Can we still build at all without irrevocably damaging the planet? What is the role of architects in a society where the gap between rich and poor is widening by the day and the city is gradually turning into a site of investment speculation? How should we deal with populist leaders who propagate traditional values and classical styles of architecture as expressions of national identity and confidence? AFFR poses the question: how innocent is architecture now?
AFFR goes live this year with a wide-ranging selection of intriguing films about the city and architecture, accompanied by introductions by experts, talks with filmmakers and discussions with the people behind the films. And AFFR features a series of special events.
The festival of course implements the necessary Covid-19 safety protocols. That means that the number of seats is limited, so make sure to book your tickets in time! And if you’re too late, don’t panic: we’ll be live-streaming the best films and exciting events on AFFR LIVE.
