Open Call: Feminist House

While meeting the German chancellor Angela Merkel who is arguably one of the world's most powerful women, Nigeria's President, Muhammadu Buhari made the above statement in response to a journalist’s question. Rather than dwell over Mr Buhari’s response, this competition of ideas aims to esteem the kitchen's essential function which supplies food and life to both sexes even if one seems derided.

Furthermore, the esteeming of the Kitchen runs a commentary on the future of the home: how the Kitchen is the last bastion of surviving rooms in the dying notion of a home because of the waning tradition, for instance, of family converging at the dining table for dinner. With the advent of television; and ubiquity of the mobile phone, other rooms in a home have become autonomous. The kitchen thus remains the only hub, where the remote possibilities of socialization and indeed life exists.

THE CHALLENGE
The challenge is how can a space commonly derided for food and cooking, the very thing humanity needs for survival, become esteemed as a standalone/ anchor space/centrifuge for other rooms. Ideas and concepts can take cues from standalone nature of the kitchen in traditional African architecture but can also accommodate a growing tradition where the kitchen serves as entry into a house.
Architectural designs should be planned within 9m by 9m footprint and not exceed 7.5m height.

SUBMISSION
Winning submissions should tell a compelling story of the feminine future of the home that is well informed by the past through well-illustrated storyboards. The submission should answer questions such as what will Kitchen as Anchor Space look like. Show us some socio-technological fiction, or faction or surprise us altogether. Entries are welcome from individuals or multidisciplinary teams of artists, architects, designers, filmmakers and engineers.
