Europan, the world’s largest biennial design competition for young designers, seeks proposals for 44 urban sites spread across 13 countries on the European continent.

The latest competition is themed on how cities can integrate ‘production’ and small-scale manufacturing. The winning teams will each receive a cash prize worth between €6,000 and €12,000 along with a commission to further develop their scheme with the stakeholders.

‘Housing remains the main program in many urban development projects of the post-industrial era,’ said Didier Rebois, The General Secretary of Europan. ‘During the last decade, we wisely added office places and public amenities, but remain especially keen on stimulating bars, shops, and restaurants because we want every new district to be a “genuine” vibrant urban neighborhood. Looking back at how we organized this wave of regeneration, we can see how we have systematically excluded one program: the productive economy.’

‘Of course, we should not bring steel factories back to the city center. Didier continues, ‘But we are already welcoming all kinds of small-scale urban manufacturing. We are accommodating more and more of the new recycling industry within the city itself. Production should be encouraged in the city, be part of the fabric, be allowed to be seen, connected to shared daily life, nurtured and celebrated.’

This year’s the 44 sites are of different sizes. Urban architecture scale like in Narvik (NO) connecting a small area (1,4ha) for “a new arena of social life” inside a development of knowledge-based production. Urban scale as in Guebwiller (FR) in France where a 6,6ha former factory needs to upcycle a mixed area including new production, Territorial area like in La Bazana (ES), a former agricultural village of 1954 including the large landscape around to a new productive area.

Other sites include five key development sites in Amsterdam (NL) where over 50.000 homes will be build in the next eight years, Hamburg (DE) and Helsinki (FI). A full list of locations can be found here.

Submissions may be in English and potentially the local language of the contest site and must include three A1-sized display boards, a description of the submitted project plus three promotional images and a project text. Applicants pay a €150 registration fee.

Europan is open to multidisciplinary teams aged under 40 years. Countries contributing competition sites include France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Poland, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Croatia, Netherlands, Finland, Sweden and Norway.

First held in 1989, Europan was set up to boost young European designers and promote open dialogue and cooperation between European countries on issues relating to housing and urban planning.

Now in its 14th edition, the contest is organized by a European federation of national architecture organizations.
