Want to make a difference in your community? Help lead the architecture profession towards a more publicly engaged future! Become a part of the first class of AIA New York's Civic Leadership Program.
Civic Leadership Program
The Civic Leader Program (CLP) is designed to develop a class of emerging professionals into civic leaders by enabling participants to steer public projects and initiatives through NYC's network of municipal agencies, boards, and processes. The program will foster the critical skills architects need to garner public support and project approval.
The AIANY Emerging New York Architects Committee (ENYA) developed CLP after identifying a need for future architects to learn how to advocate for issues that concern and inspire them. The committee’s vision is to fuel the next generation of AIA leadership by improving the practice’s culture of advocacy and augmenting young voices with new resources and guidance.
CLP’s curriculum focuses on relevant issues, including public interest design, land use and public space, community engagement, public development and infrastructure, sustainability and resilience, funding and support, the challenges of politics, activism, and new business models. Ten selected participants will hold monthly development sessions to facilitate policy discussion, proposal development, and meetings with public leaders, officials, and government representatives. CLP will culminate with two public events hosted at the Center for Architecture.
Applicants are expected to attend and participate in all events. Please be aware of all dates before applying:

CLP will benefit practitioners by increasing their awareness of important legislative issues that directly impact them. Engaged young leaders are better equipped to fight detrimental policies or support beneficial ones for the future of the profession. The program will also emphasize public speaking and presenting, community outreach and relations, and constituent consensus. CLP provides 32 CEUs.
Applicants must be AIA members and work/study in the design profession.
