Open Design Competition: New Aarhus School of Architecture – NEW AARCH

The Danish Building & Property Agency and the Aarhus School of Architecture welcome you to the open design competition for New Aarhus School of Architecture – NEW AARCH. In launching this competition we are inviting proposals for the design of the future School of Architecture in Aarhus.

When the Aarhus School of Architecture was established in 1965, the intention was that the school would be temporarily housed in the old merchant’s house at Nørreport 20, 8000 Aarhus C, until more appropriate premises could be found, or a completely new school built. 50 years have now passed - and the main address is still Nørreport 20. Today the school is spread across ten different addresses, its physical framework is outdated and no longer meets today’s requirements, either in respect to teaching or to research. The Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science, the Aarhus School of Architecture and Aarhus Municipality have consequently agreed to plan a new School of Architecture at Godsbanearealerne (an area previously used to accommodate railway freight) at the heart of Aarhus. The building is expected to be inaugurated in 2020.

To facilitate the building project and to fulfill its role as developer the Aarhus School of Architecture has chosen to enter into a partnership with the Danish Building & Property Agency, Denmark’s largest public property developer. The competition is launched with the assistance of the Danish Architects’ Association and with fundings from Realdania.

This will be the first time that a new school of architecture is built in Denmark , and it presents a unique opportunity to put Denmark, Aarhus, and the school on the world map.

The Aarhus School of Architecture and the Danish Building & Property Agency have decided to launch an international open design competition that will form the basis for the design of the new school. The aim of the competition is to find the best, most visionary solution. Once the results of the open design competition are at hand, the specific and final requirements of the school will be defined. This means that we are calling for visionary and programmatic ideas strong enough to be expanded, downsized or combined with other good ideas.

Besides concentrating the School physically and creating an up-to-date physical framework for teaching and research, it is the intention to create a school which embraces the city and the world, and makes New Aarhus School of Architecture a laboratory for rethinking and development architecture. The vision of New Aarhus School of Architecture is "Engaging through Architecture". The school wishes for a place that embodies this vision in a raw materiality and robust structure, though flexible enough to withstand changes over time. The building is not expected to be a work of art in itself, but a physical framework for continuous change; a laboratory for architecture with a general workshop character.

The school is to be built on a ground area of 10-12.000 m2 and is expected to be approximately 13,000 m2. The construction sum is expected to be approximately DKK 150 million. Additionally there can be options/add-ons, if the project receives donations. Throughout there will be a focus on the need to realise the project within the budget framework.

The Danish Building & Property Agency and Aarhus School of Architecture invites all architects, architectural engineers, landscape architects or students with a bachelor degree from an internationally approved school of architecture or an equivalent architectural education to participate in an open design competition regarding the New Aarhus School of Architecture. Our aim is to attract and involve the entire profession.

The winners of the open design competition will be invited to a subsequent restricted design competition. The solutions proposed in the open design competition will be the basis for a competition program prepared for the restricted design competition and the restricted design competition will provide the detailed design for the final project.

Overall, this means that there will be up to 6 participants in the restricted design competition, 3 of which are already selected based on a common prequalification assessment, and up to 3 are appointed on the basis of the open design competition.

The Danish Building & Property Agency expects a process as follows:
1. Prequalification of 3 participants for the restricted design competition conducted according to EU-Directive 2004/18, section IV (done already).
2. Launch of the open design competition followed by the appointment of up to 3 additional participants for the restricted design competition.
3. Launch of the restricted design competition according to EU-Directive 2004/18, section IV.

The open design competition was released 15 December 2015 at www.newaarch.dk. The participants must deliver their proposals before 1 February 2016 at 4 p.m. using the tender site www.docia.com . The proposal must consist of one digital A0 poster based on the template available onwww.newaarch.dk and www.docia.com., one image and one digital name envelope.
