UPDATE: The shortlisted entries have been announced and public voting is open until February 15th! Cast your vote here.

International staircase design specialist, EeStairs - has launched the second edition of its Staircase Design Competition. Open to anyone who wishes to participate - the entries will be shortlisted by a panel of expert judges before the winners are decided by public vote in February 2016. In March, two cash prizes of £2,000 each, will be awarded at a prize giving ceremony.

EeStairs is on the hunt for individuals who will look beyond staircases and balustrades as functional components of architecture, but instead combine practicality and artistic imagination to create truly outstanding designs.

The contest will be split into two categories. In the Corporate Staircase category, EeStairs invites competitors to add functionality to a staircase in a corporate environment, so that it inspires employees and visitors to the workspace.

Successful designs in the Repeatable Balustrade Design category will need be genuinely revolutionary, affordable and versatile – so that they are able to suit a range of applications. To add to the challenge, participants must design this quirky, distinctive and also repeatable balustrade design by only using a simple metal strip. Full briefs and requirements for both elements of the competition are available on the contest’s website.

Winners of each category will be awarded a prize of £2,000 (€2,800/$3,100) and enjoy a trip to EeStairs’ headquarters in the Netherlands, in addition to extensive publicity for their designs.

EeStairs Creative Director, Cornelis van Vlastuin comments: “Outstanding staircase designs should help to tell a story, orchestrating a wonderful journey between the spaces they connect, or even separate. We’re proud of our ability to push the boundaries of what is possible and we’re calling on designers to not submit ‘good’ designs – but to aim for extraordinary.”

As an international business which is committed to innovation and creativity, we consider it our responsibility to provide a platform for promoting and developing talent from across the world.”

Before the contest reaches the online public vote stage, a team of professionals from the worlds of architecture, product design and media will form the judging panel that will break the entries down into a shortlist. They include:
