The invention of new machines and design tools, alongside environmental urgencies and the human occupation of both existing and future built spaces, is driving new opportunities to conceive and produce the imagined building and city.
Choosing lightweight structures and prefabrication as the guiding threads of this study—along with the 21st-century demand for lightweight buildings, responsibility for the origin, application, and disposal of construction materials, awareness of the diverse types of social and technical organization on construction sites, and new devices that interface between buildings and urban infrastructure—represents the challenge of our time: the challenge of conceiving, building, and managing cities and regions.
The central theme of the new course is rooted in the intuition that "doing by thinking and thinking by doing" fosters the development of individuals who, when designing and building, will be conscious of their technological and spatial decisions.
