On Monday, October 24, at 7:00 PM, the book Arquitetura da CARPE by architect Geraldo Angelo Silva will be launched. The book presents a wealth of previously unpublished material on the history of CARPE.
CARPE (the Commission for the Construction, Expansion, Repair, and Conservation of School Buildings) was the public institution responsible for the design and construction of the most schools in Minas Gerais, with over 3,000 projects completed. It represents the most successful and enduring Brazilian experiment in the rationalization of architectural design and construction standardization for school buildings. This book reveals its history from its creation in 1958 to its dissolution in 1987. Furthermore, it analyzes the commission's unique production system and its significant contribution to the field of architecture. Based on a critical reading of original documents, site visits, reports, and built works, this publication aims to broaden the understanding of this production system and help fill a historiographical gap in architecture regarding non-monumental, everyday buildings.
