CBCA announces theme for the 13th Architecture Student Competition

“Solution for Sustainable Cities and Communities” is the theme of the 13th Architecture Student Competition. The competition is organized by the Brazilian Center for Steel Construction (CBCA). Interested teams must register via the website https://www.cbca-acobrasil.org.br/arquitetura/ by July 24. To participate, teams must consist of two to four students and be advised by a professor from their university. Teams may also include a co-advisor.

The 2020 theme is based on the 11th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 11 - https://nacoesunidas.org/pos2015/ods11/), one of the 17 recently announced by the UN, which aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Teams must develop a proposal that contributes to this goal by researching and analyzing the challenges of a specific city, municipality, neighborhood, or community. By defining a problem, participants will generate an action to address it. As such, the project scope is open, provided it aligns with the objectives of SDG 11. Based on this analysis, participants will define a specific theme for their project and develop their own program of requirements to be included in the descriptive report. The project must be conceived, designed, and structured in steel, considering the vast possibilities of this construction system within the technical guidelines specified in the competition regulations.

The first-place prize is R$ 8,000, to be distributed among the students responsible for the winning project and the faculty advisor. The advisor will also receive various publications on steel construction, issues of Arquitetura & Aço magazine, and vouchers for online courses offered by the organization representing the industrialized steel construction sector in Brazil. The results will be announced on the CBCA website on August 27.
