The Brazilian Association of Landscape Architects (ABAP) will host the 7th International Landscape Architecture Congress (CIAP) in Curitiba on May 27, 28, and 29. In this challenging landscape, where communities struggle against floodwaters that invade their homes and destroy their lives, a unique opportunity arises to seek answers and inspiration for a more resilient and sustainable future.
Over three days, architects, urban planners, undergraduate and graduate students, public sector representatives, private sector professionals, and academics from Brazil and abroad will discuss the environmental challenges faced globally over the last few decades. Among the main topics is the fight against the climate crisis. "We need to consider how attempts at human control over nature—such as the destruction of ecosystems and the canalization of rivers—generate consequences that are difficult for cities to resolve, leading to waterlogging, flooding, and inundations. Curitiba has several regions susceptible to flooding, especially in the southern part of the city, valley bottoms, and near watercourses. Investing in sustainable urban development is necessary, and to achieve this, the public sector, the population, and technical teams must work together," notes ABAP Communications Director Mario Pavanelli.
