The Basque Institute of Architecture has inaugurated its first exhibition of 2024: 'Arboretum. Trees as Architecture.' The exhibition arrives as a traveling show from the Arc en Rêve Centre d'Architecture (Bordeaux), where it was first presented in September 2021, with the aim of reaffirming the architectural character of trees and highlighting how they have been a subject of architectural reflection.
Although the precision of materials like brick contrasts with the unpredictability of elements like branches or roots, trees have undeniably occupied an important place in the history of architecture. On one hand, they have served for centuries as the source of one of our primary building materials. On the other, they are a fundamental element of architectural design and urban development projects. Whether preserved or integrated into various interventions, trees often align with the intentions of professionals in architecture, urban planning, and landscape design.
