Architectural Association Visiting School - Rio de Janeiro

Registration is now open for the Architectural Association Visiting School (AAVS) workshop in Rio de Janeiro, taking place in July 2021!

The workshop will examine tectonic elements within the tropical, post-colonial, and urban context of Rio de Janeiro. This year, the focus will be on the cobogó, a tangible manifestation of the ongoing negotiation between sharing domestic space and the production of subjectivity. These perforated elements, implemented to mitigate sunlight, heat, and humidity, have been widely adopted as an affordable, efficient, and versatile means of providing environmental comfort. Beyond pragmatic concerns, the use of cobogó in interiors and facades has enabled ways of life that extend beyond the simple (re)production of labor. Consider, for instance, the leisure of resting in a hammock behind cobogós, protected from direct weather while selectively engaging in external social interaction. Cobogós allow architects and inhabitants to rethink the role of partitions within the home.
