Carlos Bunga – Inhabiting Together

Nara Roesler São Paulo is pleased to present the exhibition "Habitar Juntos" (Living Together), opening on February 24, 2024, from 11 am to 3 pm. The show features new, previously unseen works produced in Brazil by artist Carlos Bunga, who was born in 1976 in Porto, Portugal, and currently lives and works near Barcelona, Spain. Accompanied by a text from Ivo Mesquita, the exhibition highlights key elements of the artist's research, which for over 20 years has centered on expanded painting, drawing close connections with architecture, installation, video, and performance. On the opening day, Carlos Bunga will lead a guided tour of the exhibition at 1 pm. He will arrive in São Paulo on February 14 to install his works.

Cardboard boxes and adhesive tape are recurring materials in Carlos Bunga’s practice, frequently used in installations that create hybrid, modifiable spaces. Notable examples include the intervention "Mausoléu," which occupied the octagon of the Pinacoteca de São Paulo in 2012, and more recently, "Contra la extravagancia del deseo," presented at the Crystal Palace of the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid in 2022.

At Nara Roesler, Bunga proposes two works utilizing these materials. The gallery’s window display will feature architectural structures built from cardboard, while the main exhibition space will be occupied by cardboard boxes arranged side-by-side, which visitors must traverse to follow the exhibition path. The work is rooted in the concept of the loss of geographic and social territories and bears a resemblance to "Occupy," a recent installation created for the Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto in 2020. Through these precarious and ephemeral materials, the public is invited to move beyond mere contemplation, walking through the structures and becoming integrated into them.
