On December 2, Paço Imperial will open the exhibition "Entroncados, Enroscados e Estirados," featuring new works by Rio de Janeiro-based artist Ana Holck. The exhibition marks a new phase in her distinguished 22-year career. Curated by Felipe Scovino, the show presents eight works from the three series that give the exhibition its name. Produced this year using porcelain and stainless steel—materials the artist had not previously utilized—the works bridge the concepts of painting and sculpture.
"The objects create a transitional situation, oscillating between two- and three-dimensionality. They are doubly vectorized: they have an affinity with painting—not only because they are wall-mounted, but especially due to their graphic quality—yet they remain, fundamentally, sculptures," says curator Felipe Scovino.
These new works closely align with the themes the artist has explored since the beginning of her career: the city, the urban environment, architecture, and civil construction. However, while Ana Holck previously utilized pre-fabricated, industrial materials such as concrete blocks, bricks, and adhesive vinyl, she has chosen to experiment with more malleable materials for this new phase. "I am not a ceramicist; for me, porcelain is simply another medium for sculpture, which is why I have always wanted to combine it with other materials," explains the artist, who uses a flexible, spring-loaded stainless steel tape to pair with the porcelain. With a background in Architecture and Urbanism, the artist incorporates many concepts related to her training, albeit in a new way. "My perception of space, based on the temporality of experience, comes from architecture, but I seek to deconstruct what I have learned, embracing improvisation, chance, and accident," she says.
