Architects traditionally work in urban regions where economic and population growth drive demand, often leaving remote and rural areas neglected by the design professions.
In a lecture to be held at the Sesc Research and Training Center on August 14, Canadian architects Lola Sheppard and Mason White, partners at the firm Lateral Office, will discuss new roles for architecture. They will examine new territories and environments for design, as well as the research and design approaches required to operate in unconventional regions.
Drawing from a broad spectrum of extreme climatic, cultural, and geographical conditions—from leisure in Canada's National Parks to small fishing villages on the country's east coast, and work with indigenous populations in the far north—the lecture seeks to expand the scope of architecture.
