"in Limbo" opens on Thursday, March 13, at 4 PM
A solo exhibition by Russian artist Katerina Kovalena presents large-scale installations crafted from parachute fabric at Parque Glória Maria, in Santa Teresa.
As part of the "Waiting Zone.Limbo" project—which began development in 2022, toured museums and galleries in Moscow, was featured at the 60th Venice Biennale, and was exhibited in Senegal—the exhibition "in Limbo" by Russian artist Katerina Kovalena will occupy Parque Glória Maria (formerly Parque das Ruínas) starting March 13. Kovalena has conceived large-scale installations dedicated to the theme of "waiting," with new meanings adapted for the former mansion of Laurinda Santos Lobo, a patron of the Rio de Janeiro Belle Époque who frequently hosted intellectuals and artists. The artist has dedicated several recent works to this solo exhibition: an installation made from parachute fabric inspired by the traditional attire of the *baianas*, as well as a painting honoring the city's patron saint, Saint Sebastian. Other works establish a connection between Europe and Brazil, engaging with the history of the mansion itself, which played a significant role in fostering these ties.
The exhibition also features works previously presented abroad, such as a nine-meter-long piece made of parachute fabric inspired by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo’s fresco (where the four continents unite), as well as part of the installation "The Abduction of Europe," a six-meter-long wedding dress.
