In October 2016, the School of Architecture at Universidad San Sebastián launched the first in a series of inter-school workshops aimed at fostering critical discussion in architecture, using the project as a vector. This inaugural experience, led by the prominent Spanish architect and academic Juan Herreros, is captured in this publication. It documents the productive week of work shared by the participants—ten national architecture schools and one international school—alongside Herreros, as they designed various proposals seeking a critical and contemporary approach to the issue of residential infrastructure in the La Vega sector of Santiago, Chile.
Beyond the eleven projects developed, the workshop also served as a forum for reflection on the proposed themes, drawing from lectures and conversations held by Herreros and Enrique Walker, a special guest and prominent Chilean architect with an extensive academic career in the United States. Herreros’ keynote lecture, “The Project of Practice,” and the conversation with Walker, “Among Cooks,” have been transcribed in this bilingual publication, forming a robust body of discussion that establishes itself as the first in the series of publications associated with the USS International Workshop.
