
São Paulo, like other global metropolises, faces significant challenges in managing its water resources, including diffuse urban water pollution and flooding—consequences of an accelerated urbanization process that often overlooks the biophysical potential of its natural landscapes.
In this context, Green Infrastructure is recognized as a landscape design method capable of mitigating and treating water pollutants through the creation of multifunctional landscapes. These integrate Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) for ecological source-control management and adapt gray infrastructure to the hydrological cycle, while simultaneously reducing flood risks, providing opportunities for the revitalization of urban watercourses, and delivering additional ecosystem services to society.
The course addresses essential topics for ecological water management and the revitalization of urban rivers and streams through a practical exercise in which students collaborate to develop a Green Infrastructure project for a São Paulo watershed.
