The Ministry of Cities, through the National Secretariat for Peripheries, announces the second edition of the Periferia Viva Award. In 2024, the award aims to recognize, value, empower, and reward projects and actions that contribute to addressing socio-spatial inequalities and promoting the sustainable development of Brazilian peripheries.
Climate change heavily impacts peripheral communities, making the promotion of effective adaptation, mitigation, and prevention actions urgent. Extreme weather phenomena—such as severe storms and frequent heatwaves that trigger flooding and landslides—demand efficient, creative, integrated, and long-lasting solutions. These challenges exacerbate environmental racism, highlighting the need to integrate these communities into solution strategies.
Consequently, this year’s theme is "Periferia Viva is a Risk-Free Periphery," emphasizing the urgency of climate crises and encouraging the participation of initiatives that strive to minimize socio-environmental risks in peripheral areas, transforming vulnerable regions into models of resilience and adaptation. In total, 178 winning initiatives will be selected, with prizes ranging from R$30,000 to R$50,000.
