The Paris Agreement is an international treaty on climate change. Adopted by 196 countries in Paris on December 12, 2015, it entered into force on November 4, 2016. Its goal is to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius—preferably 1.5 degrees—compared to pre-industrial levels. To achieve this long-term temperature goal, countries aim to peak greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible to achieve a climate-neutral planet by mid-century. This entails reducing domestic greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40% by 2030 relative to 1990 levels.
It is 2022, and the consequences of our failure to address the climate emergency are everywhere: extreme heat waves, fires, floods, and devastating droughts. According to the UN, the world is far from meeting the Paris Agreement goals. While carbon emission reductions peaked at 17% during coronavirus lockdowns, they are already approaching pre-pandemic levels and will have little long-term impact on greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, which remain at record levels. Temperatures continue to rise, and water and ecosystems are increasingly threatened... We must be radical.
