Concéntrico, in its effort to initiate new formats that respond to urban transformations, presents a call for entries in collaboration with the Logroño City Council and LIF 2002 (Logroño Railway Integration), as part of the city's strategic plan to address heatwaves. The objective of this call is to create a permanent urban climate island, to be located in the vicinity of the Felipe VI Park lake on the unpaved area that forms a hexagonal plaza.
This competition is organized in two phases: the first, open to architecture firms until November 29, 2024, requires a summary panel in A2 format, while the second phase will offer €1,500 to four finalists, with a €10,000 fee for the winning project. The execution budget for the Urban Climate Island is estimated at €80,000.
Over the last few decades, climate change has significantly impacted natural and socioeconomic systems, primarily driven by greenhouse gas emissions, particularly carbon-based ones. In Southern Europe, an increase in the frequency of extreme weather events—such as heatwaves, droughts, and floods—is anticipated. Given this situation, it is essential to implement adaptation measures to mitigate these effects, especially in cities where phenomena such as heat islands—areas that experience significantly higher temperatures than their surroundings—are prevalent.
