The Municipal Government of Sobral, Ceará, Brazil, through the Secretariat of Urbanism and Environment (SEUMA), is promoting the National Public Architectural Design Competition titled "Monumento da Luz" (Monument of Light), with the consultancy of the Ceará Department of the Institute of Architects of Brazil (IAB-CE).
The Monument of Light aims to create an architectural landmark in honor of the centenary of the scientific experiment conducted on May 29, 1919. During a solar eclipse on that date, Sobral gained global recognition as the site where the General Theory of Relativity was proven, revolutionizing modern science.
Simultaneously, the Monument of Light will serve as a testament to the knowledge and commitment to education that define the municipality. Sobral ranked first in Brazil for student learning in the early years of elementary school and second for the final years, according to the 2015 Basic Education Development Index (Ideb). The city has also established itself as a university hub, supported by a network of universities and colleges.
