Elizabeth de Portzamparc, one of the few women leading large-scale architectural projects in a field dominated by men, will speak this Thursday, February 6, at 6:30 PM at the IAB on "New Architecture, New Worldview." Elizabeth de Portzamparc is a member of the Honorary Committee and a spokesperson for the 27th World Congress of Architects (UIA 2020), affiliated with UNESCO, which will be held in July in Rio de Janeiro.
With cutting-edge projects such as a nearly 300-meter-tall vertical neighborhood in Taiwan, a Science City in Zhangjiang—the heart of China's Silicon Valley—and the largest European documentation center for Human and Social Sciences in Greater Paris, she advocates for new parameters in architecture. Her approach considers the worldview found in both indigenous and Eastern cultures, where everything is interconnected: humans with one another, with nature, and with the universe. She cites Philippe Descola, who maintains that "the separation between human beings and nature, introduced by Cartesian rationalism, has justified human-led destruction for centuries." For her, architecture, "like other creative fields such as the visual arts and sciences, is beginning to show clear signs of aligning with the importance of considering the whole and all interrelationships." She emphasizes, "We already clearly recognize this worldview in quantum physics, history, and anthropology, and we must assert it more strongly in architecture."
Admission is free, subject to the auditorium's capacity. Those interested must register in advance via the following link: http://bit.ly/iabrj21
