Walking provides significant benefits to the city: it is not only a sustainable mode of transport, but it also brings vitality to public space and, as various studies have shown, improves the physical and mental health of its inhabitants. For these reasons, walking should be promoted through urban planning and design, as proposed by Chile's recent National Urban Development Policy (PNDU).
In this context, this seminar seeks to analyze and discuss the challenges of urban planning regarding pedestrian mobility in our cities. National and international experts will present on the issues surrounding pedestrian public spaces, the importance of local engagement and citizen participation in improvement proposals, and the need to move toward more democratic and inclusive street planning.
This seminar aims to contribute to the debate surrounding urban planning and its role in facilitating street design that promotes walking, thereby contributing to the construction of more sustainable cities.
