
This course aims to introduce prospective architecture students to fundamental concepts in the development of architectural projects, specifically those related to materialization. The goal is to facilitate the mastery of a technical language that will be used throughout their academic and professional careers.
We will begin by defining and classifying the elements and systems that make up a construction, aiming to approach the concept of materiality that underlies the design process. Subsequently, we will analyze a series of works that exemplify the use of materials, tracing the history of applied technologies, materials, and tools. We will examine specific challenges such as the transport and hoisting of components, spanning large distances, the formation of unique pieces, mass production, and high-rise construction, as well as other issues related to form, spatial perception, light management, permeability, and the relationship with nature.
