"Abyssal Turn"
Collective exhibition opening on November 6 at Sala Antonio Berni,
at the Consulate of the Argentine Republic in Botafogo
The Consulate of the Argentine Republic in Rio de Janeiro concludes its 2024 programming with a collective exhibition featuring 27 artists who explore two significant decolonial terms: the "decolonial turn" and the "abyssal line." The combination of these terms inspired the title of the exhibition, which opens on November 6 at the Sala Antonio Berni in the Consulate of the Argentine Republic in Botafogo, curated by Aline Reis. These concepts draw from the work of philosophers Maldonado-Torres and Frantz Fanon. Decoloniality has so profoundly impacted our historical perceptions over the past decade that we have had to shift our perspective on the reality that still persists along the abyssal line separating the Global North and South. The term "Latin America" has also undergone this shift, challenging the notion that an entire continent was "discovered" and named after an explorer, ignoring the Indigenous peoples who already inhabited the Americas.
