Parametric Design and Digital Solutions Course

Taught by Prof. Andrés Passaro, PhD, and Carina Carmo, MSc, the course introduces students to Rhinoceros and Grasshopper, software capable of generating a wide range of formal solutions in architecture and design.

Course Description
The course aims to provide participants with exposure to digital tools for parametric design (Rhinoceros and Grasshopper) to explore alternatives in the architectural design process, enabling the generation of a greater number of formal solutions for design challenges through system construction.
Traditional design processes are often inefficient at producing a diverse range of solutions. While architects can creatively resolve spatial problems based on project feedback and spatial experience, these solutions are generally limited in number, and their quality is often difficult to measure due to a lack of process systematization. The practice of building systems for form generation began in the 1960s with the design methods movement and has gained traction among architects. While it significantly expands the exploration of formal repertoires, it requires designers to revisit their methodological foundations.
The rapid development of CAD software makes the interface between the designer and computational processes increasingly intuitive, opening the "black box" and allowing greater freedom in the construction of new formal systems.
