The Political Re-literacy and Critical Education Program is an extension of artist Traplev’s "pedagogical cushions" project. Beyond providing a didactic tool, the program focuses on educational activities to foster discussions on themes addressed in the cushions, specifically those related to progressive programs and social justice movements in Brazil.
In the context of this workshop at the Institute of Architects of Brazil in Pernambuco (IAB-PE), I propose to present a historical timeline of Brazil based on the principles and values of Anísio Teixeira’s democratic education, as well as the adult literacy and critical awareness efforts of the Popular Culture Movement of Recife (MCP) during Miguel Arraes’s tenure as mayor of Recife in 1961.
The workshop also includes two guided tours: one to the open-air arena at Sítio da Trindade, which served as the MCP headquarters from 1961 to 1964, and another to the former Experimental School. The modern building was inaugurated in 1961 by the Brazilian Center for Educational Research (CRPE) in Recife, while Anísio was president of INEP in the 1950s and 60s, and where Gilberto Freyre served as director of the school in Apipucos (now the Fundaj campus).
