The 'Ideas en Pandemia' and 'Proyecto Perú' initiatives, in collaboration with the Municipality of Lima, have launched a significant effort to bring together diverse civil society actors and local government to address the current challenges facing food markets in the country, specifically in the La Victoria district. This effort promotes formal dialogue between civil society, public agencies, the private sector, and academic institutions in Peru and Latin America to reflect on and resolve shared regional issues.
By fostering this collaboration among diverse actors, the discussion on how to address the complex challenges of operating food markets and street vending is enriched. This effort aims to encourage innovation and creativity among participants, who are invited to rethink the dynamics surrounding food markets in Peru and Latin America—including architectural design, vendor organizations, supply logistics, technological adaptation, and street commerce—with the goal of reaching Peru's Bicentennial with a vision for markets adapted to the "new normal."
To facilitate this collaboration among actors, institutions, and disciplines, an open innovation competition format was chosen. This first edition aims to spark interest and action from civil society and the public sector regarding the current challenges of food markets and street vending. This serves as a starting point for placing this critical issue on the public agenda, exploring it as a national public policy, and evaluating new measures introduced in response to COVID-19.
