The future of zoos will be decided in the coming years. We are facing radical changes in the concept, as decades of evidence have shown that animal captivity—often in poor conditions—has negatively impacted their quality of life and life expectancy. The purpose of zoos and the well-being of the more than 3.5 million animals they house worldwide are increasingly being questioned.
These spaces, which emerged between the 18th and 19th centuries and are deeply rooted in colonialism and the discovery of new worlds, must continue to evolve. The question is: in what direction?
