The new Archstorming competition takes us to Mozambique, a country defined by endless, persistent challenges. Although there has been a substantial increase in household income, more than two-thirds of the population continues to live below the poverty line.
This sub-Saharan African nation ranks 139th out of 159 countries on the UNDP Gender Inequality Index. Women here face threats of disease, discrimination, and violence.
While approximately 94% of girls in Mozambique enroll in primary school, only 11% continue their education through secondary school. As they grow older, girls face an increasing burden of domestic work and responsibilities. Many have no choice but to stay home to complete chores or work to support their families. Adolescent pregnancy is a primary reason for early school dropout; between 30% and 40% of girls become pregnant before age 18. Balancing childcare, work, and household chores creates an overwhelming burden, leaving these girls with little time for school.
