The entire world is facing the consequences of an intense increase in urbanization and urban development speculation, but in the case of tourist destinations, this has even more extreme consequences: not only because the environmental resources at risk are the very reason for these places' popularity—and, by extension, their economic and identity value—but also due to the extremely temporary nature of many of the activities in these locations.Blanco
Despite its 5,000 kilometers of coastline, Chile still lacks policies or regulations that can ensure tourism development in relation to local populations and economic activities, such as commerce, fishing, and cultural assets. The objective of this work is to describe the central coast territory through frameworks and parameters that can provide a reference for a better understanding and long-term planning of the area. As architects and planners, we have the opportunity to rethink how architectural, logistical, and cultural infrastructure can respond to the needs and aspirations of both tourists and local populations.
