Women have pioneered new ways of practicing, not only by specializing in peripheral and often transdisciplinary subjects but also by proposing new forms of business organization that generally facilitate a better balance between professional and personal life. These working methods, in the face of a reassessment of production and business models, as well as workplaces and schedules, are fundamental to addressing the challenges of a profession that—in the midst of an internal transformation—is confronting the need for economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
Therefore, it seems fitting to dedicate this issue to these pioneers, as women have been involved in the configuration of the habitat from the very beginning. They have been the catalysts for change in the profession, sometimes through their mere presence in the classroom, the office, or on the construction site. We also wish to acknowledge the men who have made, and continue to make, it possible for women to be part of the profession: fathers, professors, clients, colleagues, and partners who eased the path or simply made it possible with the simple gesture of offering an opportunity. This issue explores women in the past, present, and future of architecture—their approaches, their work, their fields of specialization, their successes and failures, their legacy, and their potential.
