The A&DS and RIAS Scottish Student Awards for Architecture

The A&DS and RIAS Scottish Student Awards for Architecture 2023 are open from the 13 September 2023

The student awards are a mark of the continuing high standards of Scottish architectural education and ensure that both construction professionals and the public can enjoy the creativity and vision of Scotland’s future architects.

Award Categories:
There are five awards – however, students are requested to submit only for categories 1 - 3. Awards 4 and 5 will be selected by the judges from projects entered for categories 1 - 3.

1) RIAS Rowand Anderson Silver Medal for Best 5th (or Final) Year Student (prize £ tbc)

Open to 5th (or final) year only - although an individual prize, if students have worked within groups in the 5th (or final) year, group work can be submitted alongside individual work to demonstrate the full breadth of the student’s work. Groups cannot win the RIAS Silver Medal, but group work is eligible for both the A&DS Designing in a Changing Climate Award and the RIAS Andy MacMillan Award. Group work should be clearly marked as group work.

Work submitted must be from 5th (or final) year, academic year 2022-2023.

2) Architecture and Design Scotland Award for Best 3rd Year Student (prize £ tbc)

Open to 3rd year only - although an individual prize, if students are working within groups, group work can be submitted alongside individual work to demonstrate the full breadth of the student’s work. Groups cannot win the Architecture and Design Scotland Best 3rd Year Award, but group work is eligible for both the A&DS Designing in a Changing Climate Award and the RIAS Andy MacMillan Drawing Award. Group work should be clearly marked as group work.

Work submitted must be from 3rd year, academic year 2022-2023.

3) Architecture and Design Scotland Placemaking Award (prize £ tbc)

Open to all years - group work and individual work can be submitted. As a group or individual submission Architecture and Design Scotland Placemaking Award nominees will be eligible for both the Designing in a Changing Climate Award and the RIAS Andy MacMillan Drawing Award.

Work submitted must be from students’ academic year 2022-2023 and must demonstrate an approach to placemaking issues, master planning or urban/townscape design – not individual buildings within the town or cityscape! (Note: Individual building designs will be disqualified).

4) Architecture and Design Scotland Designing in a Changing Climate Award (prize £ tbc)

Open to all years (individuals and groups) - this is not a separate entry and is selected from categories 1 - 3. This award looks at architectural responses to the climate emergency.

5) The RIAS Andy MacMillan Drawing Award (prize £ tbc)

Open to all years - this is not a separate entry and is selected from categories 1 - 3.

Key dates:
Submissions open: Wednesday 13th September

Submissions close: noon on Wednesday 18th October

Winner Announcement and Andy MacMillan Lecture: Late November/Start of December 2023

What do I need to submit?
Images:

Maximum of 10 x A3 ‘landscape’ images (as JPGs) showing a maximum of two projects from the student's current year. All JPGs should be at least 300 dpi, labelled with the project name and numbered.

In addition, the submission should also include low resolution of the same 10 landscape images. All of these JPGS should be approximately 72 dpi and labelled with the project name and numbered in the same order.

The shortlisting and judging process will be carried out anonymously so images must not include the students names and name of schools. Images submitted with identifying text will not be accepted.

Text:

1. A short description of the project/s shown in the images (word count: 100 - 150 words).2. Sustainability Agenda Description (Detail of how the design of this project meets a sustainable agenda - word count: 100 - 150 words).

Students will also need to attach a passport style photograph.
