Googie Architecture: Futurism Through Modernism

By — Filed under: Cultural ,restaurant , , , , , ,

Photo by Don Barrett - http://www.flickr.com/photos/donbrr/

At the peak of the modern era, a meshing of car culture and the brought about the gaudy and garnished Googie architecture. The signatures Googie style lie in sweeping arches and hard angles, cantilevered roofs and bold colors, and, its most relative homage to the , the starburst. The first of the Googie style, and its namesake, was a coffee shop designed by architect John Lautner by the name of “Googies”. With its place on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles the new style caught the eye of many passersby who began to associate the style with the glamour of Hollywood. The spread of this movement from Southern went most notably north and south along the shore to become a symbol of west coast futurism. read more »

Creative Alliance Cafe / PI.KL Studio and Kroiz Architecture

The Café at the Creative Alliance is the last piece of a 10-year redevelopment of the former Patterson Theater into an urban arts center and community anchor. Budget constraints and the challenge of actually fitting a commercial kitchen, bar and dining room into the remaining 1,300 sqf had delayed the build-out of the space for almost a decade and a successful design relied on formal restraint and an opportunistic attitude to all possibilities.

Xing Restaurant / LTL Architects

Uploaded by — Filed under: Hotels and Restaurants ,restaurant ,Selected , , , ,

© Michael Moran Studio

This 2000 sqf Chinese restaurant occupies a floor plan typical in New York, in which the middle of the plan is a bottleneck—a result of lightwells located on each side of the tenement building. Rather than force the design to hide this distinction of the front and the back, the approach for Xing was to accentuate the unique nature of each of the spaces. Employing a logic derived from the Surrealists’ game of the Exquisite Corpse, the space is composed of four distinct, yet interlocked areas, each defined by a specific material.

Nobu Dubai / Rockwell Group

Uploaded by — Filed under: Hotels and Restaurants ,restaurant ,Selected , , ,

In , Rockwell Group has created an extension of the Nobu brand for the first Middle East location. The design is an evolution of many of the concepts developed for the flagship Nobu 57, such as the emphasis on craftsmanship, natural materials and storytelling. Large-scale computer generated woven panels surround the restaurant walls and ceiling, creating a fluid, curvilinear environment for dining. The textures and materials in this particular location were chosen to reflect the finely crafted cuisine and Nobu’s roots in the Japanese countryside, while also celebrating the Dubai beachfront context. David Rockwell, Founder and CEO of Rockwell Group, explained: “The context, landscape and history of this new restaurant brought about all sorts of new and exciting challenges. We had to think about its location not only in the Middle East, but also in Dubai as the epicenter of an ever-growing and flourishing environment for building, not to mention being more specifically in the larger-than-life Atlantis resort on Palm Jumeirah.”
