Hypar Pavilion / Diller Scofidio + Renfro with FXFowle

Construction is complete on Hypar at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, situated on the edge of Hearst Plaza and 65th Street, the new free standing structure is the home of a new public lawn and restaurant.

The dual requirements of a destination restaurant and a public green space located within the confines of the Plaza are satisfied with a single architectural gesture sited between the reflecting pool and the plaza’s north edge. Elizabeth Diller comments, “Hypar Pavilion’s moment of invention came when we discovered how to design a destination restaurant without consuming public space on the Lincoln Center campus. The roof became a new kind of interface between public and private, with an occupiable twisting grass canopy over a glass pavilion restaurant.”

Follow the break for more photographs of the new Hypar Pavilion.

A Canopy and a Pavilion at Porte des Lilas / Matthieu Gelin & David Lafon

Uploaded by — Filed under: Offices ,Pavilion ,Selected , , , ,

© Nicolas Waltefaugle

Architects Matthieu Gelin & designed both an office building and pavilion on this site in , France. The office building required two different programs; housing both RATP office space on the ground level and circus office space on the second floor, each function was defined by use of materials.

The pavilion is a white folded shape that emerges from the ground at the entrance of the subway station Porte des Lilas. This monolithic shelter provides a dynamic shape and strong signal for travelers. Exceptional by its great dimension, its sharpness and folding is both artistic and functional, appropriately providing enough space for two buses.

After the break is further description about each project and photographs.

Simpson Park Hammock Pavilion / Oppenheim Architecture + Design

Uploaded by — Filed under: Landscape ,Pavilion ,Selected , , , , ,

Simpson Park Hammock is easily accessible from downtown Miami at the intersection of South Miami Avenue and SW 15th Road. Simpson Park Hammock’s history dates back to 1913 when residents requested that 5.5 acres of native hardwood hammock be preserved as a natural area.  Since then there have been many highs and lows and this new pavilion structure, by Miami architect Chad Oppenheim and Swiss landscape designer Enzo Enea, was part of the first phase of a public/private partnership to revitalize this historic park and return it to the community.  The pavilion embodies a symbiotic relationship between nature and architecture as the structure embraces and becomes interwoven within the diverse indigenous canopy of the hammock while minimizing ecological site impact.

After the break you will find more photographs of the pavilion and words from Chad Oppenheim.

Lightwave / AnL Studio

By — Filed under: Cultural ,Pavilion , , ,

The Parklands, South Bank, , Australia, has played host to Lightwave, a sensory light installation at the Unlimited festival. At 10m x 16m x 5.5m, Lightwave is not just a sculpture or an art piece, but an object that can be interacted with, like a large animated toy or hybrid living creature—glowing and pulsing by the river. The design by AnL Studio was intended to provoke conversations about using contemporary parks as a performative public space. By offering a new and unexpected experience between people and the object (displayed art), or between nature and the (artificial) object, Lightwave responds in a purposefully dynamic and playful way, engaging and inviting public participation. The object is responsive to the new environment, therefore generating a new pattern into the place and time.  More explanation and photographs of Lightwave following the break.

Brittlebush / Simon De Aguero

By — Filed under: Pavilion , , , , , , ,

Courtesy of Simon De Aguero

Brittlebush was developed as a design-build experience for Simón De Agüero, graduate student, designer, and project manager. The design is an experimental desert dwelling for winter residents at Taliesin, the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture. Simón envisioned the design to be an open-air living space with protective roof and walls for the sleeping area.

Approximately 90% of the steel in the project was salvaged from the school scrap yard; 100% of the rammed earth for the walls was from the school property; 100% of the wood used for the formwork was salvaged from onsite renovation waste.

Follow the break for more images and information about Brittlebush.

Encants Market / JDS Architects

By — Filed under: Pavilion , , ,

For JDS Architects Encants Market in , the firm employs their conventional strong geometry to create an open market place.  The occupiable  roof measures 7 meters in thickness and contains about half of the market’s activity (the other half occurs between the roof and the parking level).  Inside, a ramp brings visitors to ground level, echoing the same circulation ideas found in Frank Lloyd Wright’s New York Guggenheim.  From ground level, the open sides of the market create a feeling of permeability, allowing easy access for those passing by.
